The Business Continuity process

Business Continuity Planning (BCP) is the process of ensuring that an organization can continue to operate and deliver its products and services in the event of a disruption. A Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is a subset of BCP that focuses on restoring the IT systems and data that support the critical business functions. A DRP typically includes the following steps:

  • Identify the potential disaster scenarios that could affect the organization, such as earthquakes, floods, fires, cyberattacks, power outages, etc.
  • Assess the impact and likelihood of each scenario on the business operations, assets, resources, and stakeholders. This is also known as a Business Impact Analysis (BIA).
  • Define the recovery objectives and strategies for each scenario, such as the Recovery Time Objective (RTO), which is the maximum acceptable time to restore the IT systems and data, and the Recovery Point Objective (RPO), which is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss.
  • Develop and document the procedures and responsibilities for implementing the recovery strategies, such as backup and restore, failover, relocation, etc. This includes identifying the roles and tasks of the recovery team, the communication channels, the resources and equipment needed, and the testing and validation methods.
  • Train and educate the staff on their roles and responsibilities in the DRP, and conduct regular exercises and tests to ensure the plan is effective and updated.
